All the world’s a stage,
and all the men and women merely players … You might look for a “philosophy
of the gesture” in these recent paintings from Tim Eitel’s
brush. The artist has an uncanny knack of pinning down the moment when
there’s more to a pose than immediately hits the eye; but mostly
the settings take over: anonymous spaces in infinite shades of gray and
green that seem so self-sufficient that it becomes very difficult for
the human element to assert itself. But still it does, as fragile symbols
in quietly menacing surroundings.
Tim Eitel: A Stage spotlights paintings from between 2004
and 2006. Their unity of purpose makes them into a loosely connected group
of works. The artist has selected shots from his photographic sketchbook,
illustrating his view of the world and his work process. The photos accompany
a conversation with writer Christoph Peters, best known for his novel Das
Tuch aus Nacht, which will appear in an English translation in 2007.
They first met on a stage, as members of a panel discussion, and have kept
the dialogue going ever since.
